Gus and Us Grill

Today on the Bite Tonight: Gus and Us Grill

Gus & Us Grill is a Greek restaurant located on the corner of Southfield Freeway and Outer Dr. in Allen Park, MI (right across from the Fairlane Green shopping mall on “the hill”). Gus & Us used to be the Opa restaurant years ago, but has transformed into a great new eatery. Gus & Us offers a full menu including Greek favorites, daily specials, Italian & Barbeque dishes, sandwiches & wraps, salads & soups, burgers and Coney’s, appetizers, broasted chicken and pork chops, and breakfast. Whatever you are in the mood for, Gus & Us has it. Josh and I happened to stop in for breakfast. See how they ranked.

My Pick

Country Omelette: Three eggs with onions, green pepper, sausage and hash browns inside, smothered with sausage gravy. Tip: Order the hash browns extra crispy. Ordering the hash browns well done ensures that you still get a crunch after the sausage gravy saturates the omelette. The Country Omelette is one of my favorites. There’s something about the “surprise” of all the goodies that are stuffed inside. The sausage gravy is rich, salty, and velvety. Delicious!

Josh’s Pick

George’s Special Skillet: Served with two eggs (over medium), hash browns, green pepper, onions, topped with Cheddar cheese, and bacon. I don’t know who George is, but he has a pretty tasty skillet. I highly recommend any one of the three skillets from Gus & Us. This skillet has everything you could want all in one. When you break the yolk from the eggs, it drips down on top of the crispy hash browns, veggies, and bacon and acts as a sauce. The bacon was crispy, sweet and salty and the cheese covered every little bit of the skillet ingredients. On point!

Service was really good and our server was really nice and did a good job at recommending the skillet. The menu is reasonably priced for the portion and quality of food you get. The dining room was clean, updated, and full of people. It’s always a good sign when a place has a lot of customers. Gus & Us is doing something right and it’s comforting and refreshing when the servers know the “regulars.” They serve breakfast all day and their menu is pretty impressive for a smaller Greek restaurant. You can really taste the love and passion put into their food with each bite. Skip your usual night out at (insert chain restaurant here) and try Gus & Us.

B Boomers

Located on Southfield Rd. in Allen Park, MI, B Boomers is a local bar dishing out good food with big portions. Getting more bang for your buck is always a good feeling and a lot of spots aren’t as generous as they used to be. B Boomers offers a typical bar menu consisting of pizza, burgers sandwiches, soups and salads, and fried favorites. With flat screen T.V.’s, cold beers, and a full bar, B Boomers is the place to enjoy a nice dinner and watch your favorite game. Ma and I decided to grab a quick bite before heading to the Allen Park Street Fair a couple weeks ago. See how they ranked.

Reuben Sandwich: Thinly slice corned beef with sauerkraut on marble rye served with thousand island dressing and homemade chips. The corned beef was lean and juicy which made it tasty, but also made the bottom half of the bread soggy (I hate that). It’s sometimes the risk you take when enjoying a nice Reuben sandwich. The home made chips were really delicious and were served warm (so you know they were fresh).  The corned beef was stacked high and was enough for Ma and I to share. The sauerkraut added a nice bite to the salty corned beef. I really like how the sandwich was served on newspaper paper. It adds character and uniqueness.

I sometimes forget about B Boomers since they are one of the last restaurants before you hit Southfield Freeway and because they re-opened under new ownership a little over a year ago. Since rediscovering it’s charm, I have a feeling that they are my new local favorite. My next visit will be to try the pizza (which I hear is amazing). B Boomers is a great place if you are looking for good food and service at a local price. Stop in for live music, events including fantasy football, trivia, and fundraisers, and great food and drink specials.

Italian: Capicola, Mortadella, Pepperoni, Salami &  Provolone Cheese on Multi grain bread. Fresh ingredients on hearty, soft bread. My favorite thing about Potbelly is the hot peppers! Boy, are they hot.

Potbelly has gluten free (varies by location) and skinny (less meat and cheese on thin cut bread) options as well as soups, salads, smoothies, shakes, and baked goods. Established in 1977, Potbelly is still staying true to their roots and doing things the same. Stop in and check em out.

AP's the Daily Scoop

Today on the Bite Tonight: AP’s The Daily Scoop

AP Daily Scoop

To continue with my birthday celebration, Ma and I got dessert in her old neighborhood. Since my mom grew up in Allen Park and I spent a huge chunk of my childhood there, it just seemed right to revisit the area. Family owned and operated since 2008, AP’s the Daily Scoop serves up Michigan made ice cream, cakes, candy, frozen yogurt, hot beverages, and small bites including chips and soup. See how they ranked.

Blue Moon: Apparently this flavor is a Mid-West thing. Fruity, nostalgic, which took me right back to my childhood.

Chocolate Peanut Butter: Rich with a good balance of chocolate and peanut butter goodness.

AP’s the Daily Scoop hasn’t been around long, but they are doing things right.  Our delicious ice cream was served with smiles and patience (we asked to sample a couple flavors). Each day a free kids scoop is given away to the lucky child with the chosen name. Although, my name would probably never be on that board, I thought this was a super fun idea. The next time you’re craving something sweet, try AP’s the Daily Scoop.

Happy Birthday!

Today on the Bite Tonight, It’s my birthday!

Last Wednesday was my birthday and to celebrate, I took a day off and Ma and I had an adventurous day.

We started the day off with a nice relaxing early afternoon movie @ MJR Theater in Southgate: Wish I was Here. What better way to celebrate then to indulge in buttery popcorn?

Next, we enjoyed lunch with Zukin’s Rib Shack, in Lincoln Park. The food is always delicious and hits the spot.

Rib Kabob Dinner: Thick signature BBQ sauce coats the delicious breaded kabobs and french fries.

Sizzler Steak & Cheese Sub: Delicious chewy sub bun filled with tender steak and fresh veggies.

Next, we stopped into Liberati’s Italian Deli and Bakery in Allen Park, MI. Liberati’s is a local favorite offering fresh Italian dishes, pasta, deli meats and cheeses, imported beer and wine, breads, and desserts. Our eyes lit up when we spotted the olives.

Pineapple Kow Pa: Fried rice with chicken, pineapple, egg, onions, and carrot. Fried rice is one of my favorites as long as its done right, and this one was! Spicy, sweet, and salty.

Mee Khoua: Egg noodles fried to a crisp and topped with chicken, peapod, carrot, green onion, and bean sprouts in a garlic Oyster sauce. The veggies were fresh and crisp. The egg noodles were crunchy, yet soft while they soaked up the deliciously rich sauce. However, towards the end of the dish, the sauce became a little too salty and overwhelming.

Thai Vylai is a nice addition to Allen Park, but price and service were pretty mediocre. The dishes tasted pretty good and I look forward to trying more Thai very soon. My next stop is Coastal Thai in Wyandotte.

Josh went with Peanut Butter & Cookie Dough flavored gelato topped with hot fudge and caramel: Do I even need to describe it? It’s chocolate, caramel, and ice cream. It was amazing!

Josh and I have somewhat of a joke when we go out to eat. He always manages to drip something on his arm, finger, or table and I always manage to point it out. Honestly, I love it when it happens and it’s actually comforting so I had to take a picture when he was finished.

The only thing I don’t like about Yogurtown is the price. Everything is weighed per ounce and with all the mouth watering,  persuasive toppings, things can be expensive fast. Stop by Yogurtown to indulge in some delicious sweet treats soon.
