Shield's Restaurant, Bar, & Pizzeria

Today on the Bite Tonight: Shield’s Pizza

Shield's menu

Last night Josh and I decided to check our Shield’s Pizza located on Maple Rd in Troy, MI. I’ve heard good things and wanted to put their award winning pizza to the test. See how they ranked.

Atmosphere: 3 out of 5 bites

Price: 3 out of 5 bites

Quality/Taste: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Service: 2 out of 5 bites

Wow Factor: 3 out of 5 bites (customer service and unique pizza)

We we’re feeling pizza and the Polynesian caught our eye: Sweet, tangy barbecue sauce topped with brick and Cheddar cheeses, Canadian bacon and pineapple. We went with the traditional round pizza and ordered well done, but when it came out it was uncooked. It also came out with pizza sauce instead of the barbeque sauce.

Our server was really great about it and had the chef make us another pizza with barbeque sauce. The actual Polynesian was awesome! I liked that the barbeque sauce wasn’t so rich like Jet’s Pizza, it was sweet, yet subtle. Caramelized, decadent barbeque sauce smeared on top a crispy crust and topped with browned up cheese, salty Canadian bacon, and sweet pineapple. The toppings were also hooked up.

Service was very slow, but our server was nice and pleasant. Our server brought over complementary bread sticks for the wait. Then, when our pizza was incorrect, the manage came over to personally apologize and gave us a gift card for $20. Even though there was a mistake with our pizza, Shield’s went above and beyond to fix it. The manager even discounted our check even more and we ended up with a free meal and dessert. Josh and I were happy with just a new pizza, but Sheild’s was very generous. We will be definitely be back!

Gizzmos Bistro & Bar

Today on the Bite Tonight: Gizzmos Bistro & Bar

Located on Biddle Ave in Downtown Wyandotte, Gizzmos is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. Specializing in martinis, Gizzmos has recently expanded their menu introducing tapas style food items, over 50 martinis, and close to 20 local brews. See how they ranked.

Quality/Taste: 4 out of 5 bites

Service: 4 out of 5 bites

Wow factor: 3 out of 5 bites

Now before you judge a book by it’s cover, just know that I didn’t drink all these martinis alone. My good friend, Michelle and her sister, Nicole were in town, so Nastassia and I met them for a night of catching up.

DD Dirty Dog: Nastassia’s pick. Smirnoff Vodka, Olive juice, and olives. Salty, strong, and classic.

Banana Split: Nastassia’s 1st pick that she didn’t care for. Vodka, Tequila Rose , Creme De Banana, Creme De Cocoa. Nice flavor, but really sweet and heavy. Great for banana fans!

Bellitini: My pick. Vodka, Peach Liqueur, Champagne. Light, fruity with a hint of bubbly. Bellitini

Skittletini: Nicole’s pick. Vodka, Razzmatazz, Peach tree Liqueur, Triple Sec, Orange and Cranberry juice. Tasted just like a skittle and not booze. Fruity and sweet.

Mint Chocolate Chip: Michelle’s pick. Vanilla Vodka, Creme de Menthe, Irish Creme, Cream. Like a scoop of ice cream in a glass. Delicious, decadent, and rich.

What I liked about Gizzmos was that each martini was garnished beautifully. With a newly renovated interior, Gizzmos has live music and a great menu to suit any taste bud. The staff was friendly and it really seemed like our server wanted us to have a great experience, making conversation and offering her drink knowledge and recommendations. Even though I’ve lived Downriver all my life, this was my first visit to Gizzmos and it won’t be my last. No matter if you’re in the mood for a sophisticated cocktail or a beer and a small bite, stop in and check out Gizzmos.

Thanks for a wonderful evening, ladies! It was so great to see you guys.

Jersey's Sports Bar & Grill

Today on the Bite Tonight: Jersey’s

Located on Fort St. in Trenton, is Jersey’s. Allison and I used to frequent this sports bar & grill and we decided to stop in last night for dinner. Jersey’s opened a few years back and has daily drink and food specials. It’s is a good place to watch your favorite game or just enjoy a night out with friends. See how they ranked.

Atmosphere: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Price: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Quality/Taste: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Service: 2.5 out of 5 bites

Wow factor: 2 out of 5 bites

Queso Dip: Served with fresh, hot (seriously, Allison burned her lip) tortilla chips. It was nice to see a sports bar making homemade tortilla chips. The queso tasted like velveeta with a fiesta twist. It was good.

Boneless Wings (Mild): The mild sauce was buttery and delicious. These wings were not as saucy as I’d like, but still had a good flavor. The wing itself was a little small, but it wasn’t coated in all that extra chunky breading that Buffalo Wild Wings is known for. Not bad, for 10 for $7.99.

Service has always been hit or miss @ Jersey’s and it was just OK during our visit, no Wow factor. I blame that on the high staff turnover that is associated with restaurants and bars. The menu consists of a full bar, burgers, appetizers, and  salads, and sandwiches and is pretty good. Jersey’s is a good local sports bar and it’s a nice change from your neighborhood dive. Stop in and check em out.

Green Lantern Pizzeria & Lounge

It was date night this past Saturday and Josh and I were on our way to Vinsetta Garage. We we’re disappointed with a long wait time and decided to go to Green Lantern instead. Green Lantern Pizzeria, located in Madison Heights on John R & 12 Mile, is making some delicious pies.

Service: 3.5 out of 5 stars (the place was packed)

Quality/Taste: 3.5 out of 5 stars (due to greasy pizza)

Atmosphere: 4 out of 5 stars

Price: 4 out of 5 stars

Wow Factor: 4 out of 5 stars

Candy Coated Bacon: Strips of bacon brushed with a concoction of BBQ sauce, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper. When I saw this on the menu I had to order it. Caramelized sweet and spicy bacon. Uh-maze-ing!

Pepperoni & Ham Pizza: The toppings were generous and the dough was that perfect balance of crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside. It really hit the spot. The only thing that we didn’t like was the amount of grease on the bottom of each slice. Of course, we still ate most of the pizza because it was still delicious, but there needed to be something between the pizza and the pan to absorb the grease.

Green Lantern is the perfect spot if you are craving pizza and a beer while enjoying your favorite sports game. They have flat screen TVs throughout the bar so you’ll never miss a play. Sign up for the email list for a chance at winning pizza for a year.
