Detroit: Le Petit Zinc

20161204_114155

Le Petit Zinc (French slang for a local bar) is the kind of place you want to be. French food, Reggae music, quaint with such a unique vibe. They serve delicious coffee and oversized cups of hot chocolate. With a menu bursting with organic and local ingredients, Le Petit Zinc is serving up classic French fare at a friendly price. The croissant sandwiches are amazing and I recommend ordering the daily specials. See how they ranked.

Fromage de Chevre et Epinards: Goat cheese (marinated in olive oil and rosemary), spinach, and pine nuts. The crepe was light and delicate and filled with tons of fresh spinach, goat cheese, and pine nuts. The goat cheese was tangy and the pine nuts added a nice mild crunch. The greens were tossed with a light balsamic dressing which was sweet with a subtle bite.

The food is outstanding and the service is good. The inside dining room has a counter and a total of maybe 6 tables. I think it’s perfect though and creates an incredible buzz. People line up to get a seat and it makes you feel like you are apart of something great. When the weather allows it, the outside patio opens up into a lovely little court yard resembling French country side cafes and offers more seating. Le Petit Zinc is exploding with character with loud colors, paintings, fresh flowers on every table, and one of a kind trinkets sprinkled all throughout the restaurant. Check em out!

The Zenith

Today on the Bite Tonight: The Zenith

zenith lamp

Located in the Fisher Building on W Grand Blvd. is The Zenith, a funky, retro, and quirky gem that I just had the pleasure of experiencing. For Mother’s Day, I took my dearest friend, Amanda out to brunch. With a one of a kind Southern-Mexican inspired menu that’s full of flavor and color, the Zenith’s decor is equally as vibrant. With goodies like Red Velvet Waffles, Pistachio Crepes, and omelettes filled with everything from rice and beans to candied mango bacon, the Zenith is sure to attract a serious crowd. See how they ranked.

Meximash: Scallion mashed potatoes topped with chorizo, two fried eggs, chipotle sour cream and black beans. The chorizo was salty and slightly spicy and mashed potatoes still had some texture. The chipotle sour cream was seriously spicy and had such a good flavor. The eggs were a little undercooked for my liking, but when the yolk broke it really pulled everything together.

Candied Mango Bacon and a side of Jalapeno Hollandaise: The bacon was the perfect marriage of sweet and salty, without being too overwhelming. The sugar from the mango really caramelized the bacon. When i saw the jalapeno hollandaise on the menu, I just had to try it so I ordered a side. The Jalapeno was subtle, but just enough to kiss you with spice. Thumbs up!

The Zenith is just one of those places you have to try. With faux snake-skin covering the benches and a style that makes you think “upscale vintage garage sale,” it’s really quite the adventure. The dining room is filled with interesting pieces that can only be described as art. The service was good and the menu is one of the most unusual and creative I have come across. Whether it’s a theater performance or just a hungry tummy that brings you to the Zenith, I promise that it won’t be your last visit. You just don’t come across places like this everyday. Check em out!

Supino Pizzeria

Today on the Bite Tonight: Supino’s

Located in Eastern Market, on Russell St. is Supino Pizzeria. With a wide array of specialty pizzas and creative options including the Supino (roasted garlic, black olives, chili oil, ricotta, mozzarella) and the Bismarck AKA “one egg” (fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, egg), Supino’s is really setting the bar high for local pizza joints. My favorite is the white pizza selections (no sauce) because, frankly, sometimes you just don’t feel like sauce. See how they ranked.

Since there was a Tiger’s game and seating was limited, Josh and I got a pie to go.

We went with a “create your own” pizza.

Pepperoni, roasted garlic, and red onions: The roasted garlic really shined through and added that extra “umph.” The sweetness of the onions and the zing from the pepperoni and sauce was delicious. I really enjoyed the thin crust which was cooked perfectly and had a slight chew and a crispy edge. A little more cheese would be really amp up the pizza.

For local places, Supino really brings the competition. They were super busy when I walked in, which only can mean good things. We went with the large (18 inch) and it was the biggest pizza box I ever carried. The fresh and creative toppings really set them apart from the boring options offered at their competition. I think my heart belongs to flavored crust, but we will definitely be back to try that fried egg on a pizza!

Dago Joe Italian Catering & Buffy's Mexi-casian Grill

Today on the Bite Tonight: Food trucks!

In my opinion, food truck’s are where it’s at. This past weekend was my work Summer party @ Campus Martius and I was thrilled because instead of buffet food, they offered food truck selections. When it comes to Dago Joe’s, they are doing delicious Italian favorites like no other. Buffy’s Mexi-casian Grill marries impressive Mexican and American cuisine. Check it out.

Dago Joe’s Meatballs: Giant flavorful meatballs topped with spicy marinara. Dago Joe’s advertises the best meatballs around and I would agree. Both the meatballs and marinara were bursting with incredible flavor. You could really taste the love and passion in the food. Amazing!  Check out the meatball sandwich.

Buffy’s Mexi-casian Grill’s Chicken Chimichanga: Deep fried tortilla stuffed with chicken and topped with lettuce tomato, guacamole cream sauce, and spicy sauce. First of all, I just want to point out that everyone was ordering these and they looked so good that it was turning heads and sparking interest. When I ordered mine, the taste was as up there as the presentation. Crispy, fresh, spicy, and cool. I’ve never had a chimichanga that tasted so good. It wasn’t greasy and the chicken was marinated and had such a good flavor.

The party itself was entertaining, but of course, I  look forward to the food. If you are ever Downtown Detroit, stop by Campus Martius for lunch and visit the food truck scene. You won’t be disappointed.

Zef's Coney Island

Today on the Bite Tonight: Zef’s

Located a few doors down from Foran’s Grand Trunk Pub in Downtown Detroit is Zef’s Coney Island. They serve breakfast and deliver local, and when you work Downtown like I do, this is key. This week, I stopped in and had breakfast. See how they ranked.

Breakfast Special: I kept it classic. Two eggs over medium, hash browns well done, and ham with two pieces of wheat toast. I love a nice thick piece of salty ham for breakfast and Zef’s was delicious. The hash browns were cooked perfectly and this really hit the spot.

Zef’s is your typical coney island. I have had some good dishes and I have had some not so good dishes. One thing that I will say is that service was always good, even when the food wasn’t. I was even able to enjoy the morning news with CNN on two flat screen TVs during my visit which was more than most coney islands I’ve been to.

Italian Cheesy Chicken Stuffed Crescent Rolls with Pesto Penne

Judy is at it again. She made another delicious, creative pasta dish this time incorporating crescent rolls.

Crescent Rolls: Stuffed with chicken, Italian cheeses, sauteed peppers, onions, and love! The flaky roll is the perfect home for the slightly spicy filling.

Pesto Penne: Alfredo sauce, pesto, red pepper, onion, and chicken. The pasta was creamy and tender. The chicken was moist and juicy. Judy baked her pasta so it’s more like a casserole and it turned out delicious!

If you’re bored with dinner ideas and don’t know what to make. Just grab a tube of crescent rolls and wrap them around your favorite dish!

Tip: Crescent rolls go great with roast beef!

Kate's Chicken Noodle Soup

So this past weekend, Kate tried my Chicken Noodle Soup recipe, but added her own touch. This is why I love sharing recipes because you get different variations of your classics. See how hers turned out.

Brynn was hungry so we gave her a green onion until the soup was ready. Crazy baby to eat a green onion the way she did.

Image

Kate’s Chicken Soup: Kate added Acini di Peppe pasta (which resembles tiny balls) and grated Parmesan cheese. Sometimes bite-sized noodles are better allowing you to get the perfect bite with every spoonful. Kate acquired these ingredients from her mother in law. I didn’t realize how good Parmesan cheese was in chicken noodle soup, but it’s my new thing! It gives it a nice subtle salty flavor. Thanks to the Bentley women! Well done Kate.
