Leo’s Coney Island

Today on the Bite Tonight: Leo’s Coney Island

Located in Allen Park, MI in the Fairlane Green shopping center, or as I like to call it, “the Hill,” is Leo’s Coney Island. Leo’s Coney Island is a chain with over 50 locations spread throughout Michigan. I really like Leo’s because it is more of an upscale coney joint. With a menu including Greek classics, coney traditions, Burgers and sandwiches, soups and salads, breakfast, and even healthy options, it’s no surprise why Leo’s is so successful. Ma and I decided to treat ourselves and go out for breakfast. See how they ranked.

Spinach & Feta Omelet: with hash browns. Tip: Order hash browns well done for a crispy finish. The omelet was cooked perfectly (I hate it when the egg is a little runny). The feta adds a little saltiness to this otherwise light breakfast. The spinach brightens this meal up and doesn’t judge you for eating carbs. The hash browns were nice and crispy.

Service was good and fast. The prices are good and portions are generous. Leo’s is usually busy, which is different from other coney places I’ve been to, but the dining room is larger so you never have to wait to be seated. My favorite thing about Leo’s is that they bottle their delicious Greek dressing. You can purchase this dressing, gift cards, and even order online. How many coney islands offer that level of service?

Latin Deli

The next visit on the Bite Tonight’s Dallas trip was to Latin Deli.

Located on Abrams Rd, Latin Deli is hidden away in a strip mall and if you blink, you might miss it. The menu includes delicious, fresh, and homemade sandwiches, salads, pastries, smoothies and coffee, and crepes. The crepes come either sweet or savory and the sandwiches feature authentic Latin cooking. We came here for brunch. See how they ranked.

Price: 3.5 out of 5 bites

My pick:

Passion Fruit Smoothie: Refreshing, cool, and summer-y. Perfect for brunch.

Pineapple Pork & Egg Sandwich: Homemade pork, grilled ham, grilled pineapple, cheese, Latin mayo on Ciabatta bread. I added an egg. The sweet and salty combo was really delicious and the egg was a nice compliment. The small Ciabatta bread acted as an English muffin which was soft on the inside and slightly toasted on the outside. The homemade potatoes were the star of the meal! There was this slightly sweet, salty, with just a hint of heat seasoning on the fries that I could not figure out, but it was scrumptious. The fries were soft, but not soggy. The Latin mayo for dipping was insane!

Ma’s pick:

Chicken Sandwich: Marinated chicken, tomato,  jalapenos, onions, and Latin mayo . Juicy and tender chicken with a tasty spice blend. It wasn’t too hot, but was just enough for you to taste it.

Jay’s pick:

Tamarind Smoothie: Slightly tart, but sweet and fruity.

Lomo Saltado: Sautéed beef Peruvian style, Salsa Criolla (compiled of onions, chile peppers, lime, and cilantro), Aji Marillo (yellow chile pepper), egg on Ciabatta bread. The beef was so tender and melted in your mouth. The creaminess of the egg with the salty beef and spicy salsa really was a great start to our day. The large Ciabatta bread was chewy and just delicious. It soaked up just enough of the juice from the beef to act as a sauce and not make it soggy. Again, we could not put down those fries! They are addicting.

Jalapeno and Cheddar Muffin: This took cornbread to a whole new level!  Nice balance of cheesy and spicy, but the muffin itself was killer. It tasted like a cornbread muffin married a cupcake because it had a slight sweetness to it. It was unlike any cornbread muffin I’ve ever had. It was moist, sticky, and delicious.

Latin Deli blew me away. It has a small dining room with a handful of tables on the patio as well, but that didn’t stop this deli from serving up big flavors. The quality of the food was better than most large restaurants. They are really showcasing their passion for good Latin food while offering reasonable prices. I also enjoyed that covering the walls were tons of inspirational sayings and quotes. It really was a colorful and positive environment. The staff was friendly and the service was great. This will definitely be one place I return to the next time I visit Dallas.

Yum Yum Express

Today on the Bite Tonight: Yum Yum Express

yum yum express menu

There seems to be an influx of Asian restaurants opening up Downriver. The newest one is located on the corner of Southfield Rd. and Lafayette in Lincoln Park. Specializing in Chinese and Thai cuisines, Yum Yum Express announced it’s grand opening a few weeks ago. See how they ranked.

Atmosphere: 4 out of 5 bites

Price: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Ma and I wanted to dine in, but the restaurant was only opened for carryout due to a broken dishwasher. The restaurant was still very accommodating. Sometimes, Chinese tastes better out of a box anyways!

Sweet & Spicy Thai Wings: Now, based on the menu description, I expected these to be tossed in a sweet and spicy Thai sauce, but it was served on the side. Bummer! The wings still tasted good, moist on the inside, crispy on the outside. Tip: Toss the wings in the sauce so that it caramelizes. This will really up the ante!

Chicken Fried Rice: Chicken, Carrots, white onion, peas and egg. Pretty standard. I did have to pay an extra 75 cents to add the egg to the fried rice which I didn’t like.

Beef in Garlic Sauce: Beef sauteed with broccoli, mushrooms, baby corn, green pepper, and water chestnut in a slightly spicy garlic, brown sauce. Pretty tasty, with a rich garlicy sauce. I would’ve like some onions, but the veggies were crunchy and fresh.

Yum Yum Express has better prices then other local Asian restaurants. The food is decent, not the best, but not the worst. Service was really good and we were greeted with smiling faces. The inside of the dining room is really nice, with bright walls, and a modern design. Yum Yum Express offers party trays which sets them apart from the rest. Stop in and check em out!
