Gus and Us Grill

Today on the Bite Tonight: Gus and Us Grill

Gus & Us Grill is a Greek restaurant located on the corner of Southfield Freeway and Outer Dr. in Allen Park, MI (right across from the Fairlane Green shopping mall on “the hill”). Gus & Us used to be the Opa restaurant years ago, but has transformed into a great new eatery. Gus & Us offers a full menu including Greek favorites, daily specials, Italian & Barbeque dishes, sandwiches & wraps, salads & soups, burgers and Coney’s, appetizers, broasted chicken and pork chops, and breakfast. Whatever you are in the mood for, Gus & Us has it. Josh and I happened to stop in for breakfast. See how they ranked.

My Pick

Country Omelette: Three eggs with onions, green pepper, sausage and hash browns inside, smothered with sausage gravy. Tip: Order the hash browns extra crispy. Ordering the hash browns well done ensures that you still get a crunch after the sausage gravy saturates the omelette. The Country Omelette is one of my favorites. There’s something about the “surprise” of all the goodies that are stuffed inside. The sausage gravy is rich, salty, and velvety. Delicious!

Josh’s Pick

George’s Special Skillet: Served with two eggs (over medium), hash browns, green pepper, onions, topped with Cheddar cheese, and bacon. I don’t know who George is, but he has a pretty tasty skillet. I highly recommend any one of the three skillets from Gus & Us. This skillet has everything you could want all in one. When you break the yolk from the eggs, it drips down on top of the crispy hash browns, veggies, and bacon and acts as a sauce. The bacon was crispy, sweet and salty and the cheese covered every little bit of the skillet ingredients. On point!

Service was really good and our server was really nice and did a good job at recommending the skillet. The menu is reasonably priced for the portion and quality of food you get. The dining room was clean, updated, and full of people. It’s always a good sign when a place has a lot of customers. Gus & Us is doing something right and it’s comforting and refreshing when the servers know the “regulars.” They serve breakfast all day and their menu is pretty impressive for a smaller Greek restaurant. You can really taste the love and passion put into their food with each bite. Skip your usual night out at (insert chain restaurant here) and try Gus & Us.

TV’s Deli and Diner

Located on Fort St. off West Rd, in Trenton, MI is a cute little diner serving up some serious home cooking. TV’s Deli and Diner got it’s name from the initials of it’s owners, Tracey and Victor, who’s love for scratch cooking led them to open up the place in 1995.

When I first walked in the diner, which has an old school 50’s diner type feel, I was blown away by the menu which is nothing typical of your standard diner food. From home cooked soups including Lobster Bisque, decadent breakfast classics with a twist like Creme Brulee Waffles and comforting entrees like the Chicken and Bacon Mac and Blue Cheese, TV’s is dishing up something for everyone. See how they ranked.

I just want to give a shout out to my friend Nastassia who has been raving about TV’s for a while and telling me to try it. So finally, myself and another friend of mine, Mandy, stopped in last weekend around 1 pm for lunch. Although there was a short wait, it was well worth every minute we spent drooling over the yummy plates as we watched them be delivered to the diners.

My Pick:

Traditional Eggs Benedict: Hot toasted English muffins, thick sliced hickory smoked ham and poached eggs topped with a heavenly drizzle of hollandaise sauce. Now, at first I was hesitant, only because I’m not a huge eggs benedict type of girl, but this totally changed my mind. It was everything I could dream of. The salty and sweet ham with the rich, creamy hollandaise sauce, and the perfectly poached egg was so delicious. The side of red skin home fries was nice, crispy, and comforting. I liked how they were generous with the ham. It was seriously one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had and surprisingly, I didn’t feel heavy afterwards.

Mandy’s Pick:

Breakfast Burrito: Sausage, onions, green peppers, tomatoes and cheese. Scrambled with 3 eggs and rolled in lawash bread with fresh salsa on the side. Served with redskin home fries or cheesy fried grits. Now, I know what you’re thinking, that this looks like any old burrito. Well, it isn’t because you could really taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients, and the huge portion was well worth the money. The fresh, homemade salsa was also delicious and added a nice brightness to the burrito.

When I was there, something magical happened and It was like I was a kid again at my favorite restaurant, only I was sipping a Mimosa and enjoying Eggs Benedict with a thick cut of delicious Dearborn Ham. It doesn’t matter if you’re 7 and eating Green, Eggs, and Ham or 42 and indulging in a Chipotle Burger topped with French fried onions and a slice of homemade pie. TV’s gives your diner classics an adult, grown up feel, by offering alcoholic drinks which are equally as delectable as their dishes. I love that TV’s is a neighborhood place and if you haven’t experienced them (because yes, it is an experience), get your butt down there!

Zef's Coney Island

Today on the Bite Tonight: Zef’s

Located a few doors down from Foran’s Grand Trunk Pub in Downtown Detroit is Zef’s Coney Island. They serve breakfast and deliver local, and when you work Downtown like I do, this is key. This week, I stopped in and had breakfast. See how they ranked.

Atmosphere: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Price: 4 out of 5 bites

Quality/Taste: 3 out of 5 bites

Breakfast Special: I kept it classic. Two eggs over medium, hash browns well done, and ham with two pieces of wheat toast. I love a nice thick piece of salty ham for breakfast and Zef’s was delicious. The hash browns were cooked perfectly and this really hit the spot.

Zef’s is your typical coney island. I have had some good dishes and I have had some not so good dishes. One thing that I will say is that service was always good, even when the food wasn’t. I was even able to enjoy the morning news with CNN on two flat screen TVs during my visit which was more than most coney islands I’ve been to.

Breakfast Quesadilla

When it comes to breakfast, I believe that eggs, breakfast meat, veggies, and a tortilla are the perfect match. You can get creative and the possibilities are endless. Here’s an easy recipe for my latest creation.

Today on the Bite Tonight: Breakfast Quesadilla.

1. In a large skillet, saute about 3 tablespoons of ground breakfast sausage with 1/4 cup of onions and peppers of your choice (I used red pepper).

2. Once the sausage is cooked, push mixture to the side and brown 6 tater tots in a little olive oil, smashing with a spatula to really get that crispy crust.

3. Once the taters are crispy, crack one egg in the skillet and scramble, combining with sausage mixture once cooked.

4. Remove taters and sausage mixture and set aside.

5. Take one large tortilla and smear enchilada, hot sauce, or whatever the heck you have in the fridge on half of the tortilla.

6. Build the quesadilla on the same half as the sauce, starting with the sausage mixture, layer on your favorite cheese, then add taters, then more cheese.

7. Fold over the tortilla and brown on each side.

You get the delicious, comfort of a breakfast burrito, but then you taste the sauce which gives it a little spicy Mexican/Spanish flavor. It’s really great if you want to impress guests with your skillet skills or perfect for an on the go breakfast meal. Try it out and tell me what you think!

Breakfast for Dinner

Every now and then I’m in the mood for a nice hearty breakfast after hours. Being a little unconventional from time to time is not only fun, but a great way to change things up. It may seem weird, but I can’t eat more than one egg or a huge meal in the morning, so “Brinner” works well for me.

Josh made me an egg, bacon, home style potatoes, smothered in sausage gravy, and served with toast. It really hit the spot. Talk about comfort food! Thanks Josh! ❤

The next time you don’t know what to make for dinner, whip up some pancakes, french toast, or an omelet.
