Detroit: Parks & Rec Diner

20170102_140811-1

I love that Parks & Rec has an old school diner vibe, yet they are amping things up with fun and creative twists on the classics. Think of your standard diner offerings, only taken to the next level. The Coney Waffle features Detroit-style chili, cornbread waffle, shredded cheddar, onions, house mustard. I took a ride back to my childhood with the Saturday Morning Cartoons which consist of cereal milk pancakes and toasted marshmallow syrup served with two eggs. Thirsty? They even fresh squeeze orange juice for Mimosas, serve Bloody Marys with a beer back, and mix bourbon and Vernors (my favorite). See how they ranked.

I was really sad because I came here for the Biscuits and Gravy, but they were all out of the gravy by the time we got there. I didn’t want to just get biscuits so I went with the Steak & Eggs Benny: House biscuit, shaved Michigan cover crop NY strip, chimichurri hollandaise, pickled red onion. The pickled red onion was slightly sweet, but had a bit. It went well with the tender, thinly sliced steak. The chimichurri hollandaise was unique and unlike anything I have ever had before. It added a nice brightness and freshness.

Allison decided on the “Build Your Own” hash with crispy, caramelized bacon and white Cheddar cheese. I liked that the hash browns were shredded and extra crispy (just how I like them). There was a cheesy pool of white Cheddar on top of the hash browns and thick pieces of delicious bacon sprinkled on top of the cheesy layer. Killer!

Parks & Rec is one of the few diners in the area that is doing things with such high standards. Don’t expect to get your typical greasy breakfast items here. Parks & Rec goes that extra step to crank out quality dishes. Just be sure to get there early (they close at 2 PM) so you don’t miss out on the Biscuits and Gravy like I did.

Leo’s Coney Island

Today on the Bite Tonight: Leo’s Coney Island

Located in Allen Park, MI in the Fairlane Green shopping center, or as I like to call it, “the Hill,” is Leo’s Coney Island. Leo’s Coney Island is a chain with over 50 locations spread throughout Michigan. I really like Leo’s because it is more of an upscale coney joint. With a menu including Greek classics, coney traditions, Burgers and sandwiches, soups and salads, breakfast, and even healthy options, it’s no surprise why Leo’s is so successful. Ma and I decided to treat ourselves and go out for breakfast. See how they ranked.

Spinach & Feta Omelet: with hash browns. Tip: Order hash browns well done for a crispy finish. The omelet was cooked perfectly (I hate it when the egg is a little runny). The feta adds a little saltiness to this otherwise light breakfast. The spinach brightens this meal up and doesn’t judge you for eating carbs. The hash browns were nice and crispy.

Service was good and fast. The prices are good and portions are generous. Leo’s is usually busy, which is different from other coney places I’ve been to, but the dining room is larger so you never have to wait to be seated. My favorite thing about Leo’s is that they bottle their delicious Greek dressing. You can purchase this dressing, gift cards, and even order online. How many coney islands offer that level of service?

Nello’s

Today on the Bite Tonight: Nello’s Family Restaurant.

Located on Woodward Ave in Royal Oak, MI is a tasty local restaurant with really good food. Nello’s menu consists of Greek classics, breakfast, pasta, sandwiches, and everyday diner favorites. I really like Nello’s because it has that welcoming diner feel, only with a sophisticated family restaurant menu.  Josh and I actually got up early enough for breakfast. See how they ranked.

Josh’s pick

Western Omelet: Ham, green pepper, onions, and cheese with hash browns. Everything you want in an omelet. Classic and satisfying.

My pick

Southern Omelet: Sausage, onions, and cheese topped with sausage gravy with hash browns. Oh goodness! The gravy was the right thing to take this omelet over the edge. Decadent, but not too rich, the saltiness from the sausage offset the creamy cheese and silky sausage gravy. Extra crispy hash browns added a nice crunch!

Nello’s always has people to fill it’s restaurant and there’s a reason why, good food + good service. You always know what to expect at Nello’s and your experience will be consistently good every time. The food portions are huge and definitely worth the money. Next time you want good home cooking, try Nello’s.

Zef's Coney Island

Today on the Bite Tonight: Zef’s

Located a few doors down from Foran’s Grand Trunk Pub in Downtown Detroit is Zef’s Coney Island. They serve breakfast and deliver local, and when you work Downtown like I do, this is key. This week, I stopped in and had breakfast. See how they ranked.

Atmosphere: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Price: 4 out of 5 bites

Breakfast Special: I kept it classic. Two eggs over medium, hash browns well done, and ham with two pieces of wheat toast. I love a nice thick piece of salty ham for breakfast and Zef’s was delicious. The hash browns were cooked perfectly and this really hit the spot.

Zef’s is your typical coney island. I have had some good dishes and I have had some not so good dishes. One thing that I will say is that service was always good, even when the food wasn’t. I was even able to enjoy the morning news with CNN on two flat screen TVs during my visit which was more than most coney islands I’ve been to.
