I am taking a little break from Texas eats to feature Sushi Bar, located on Maple, in Downtown Wyandotte, MI. Josh and I visited this restaurant a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. Offering Japanese cuisine using only the finest ingredients, a full bar, and lunch specials, Sushi Bar is Downrivers go to sushi spot. See how they ranked.

California Roll (Left): Crab Stick, Cucumber, Avocado And Caviar On The Top, Rolled With Rice And Seaweed. Classic and delicious!

Henry Ford Roll (Middle): Crab Stick, Cucumber, Rice and Seaweed. Lightly Fried. Just as delicious as the California roll, but deep fried and really good.

Multiple Orgasm Roll (Right): Rolled with Rice and Seaweed Filled with Salmon, Spicy Crab, Tuna, Avocado then Lightly Fried. Topped with Spicy Mayo. My favorite! The creaminess of the avocado complimented the spicy mayo and crab. I really liked the slight crunch of the roll. The spice wasn’t too overpowering either.

I was really impressed with the quality of the rolls. They were tightly rolled and didn’t fall apart. You could really taste the fresh ingredients with each bite. Service was good and the prices were reasonable. Sushi Bar has a nicely decorated dining room with flat screen TV’s. I also really liked that the names of the menu items were local: Detroit Roll and Biddle Roll. Kudos for “shouting out” to the community. Stop in and check em out!

Crispy Cali Roll: Crabstick, avocado, and cucumber with spicy mayo and a sweet glaze. Spicy, crispy, and sweet all in one bite! I haven’t met a tempura roll I didn’t like.

Spicy Salmon (top): Spicy salmon, cucumber, and tempura flakes. A nice change from the spicy tuna packed with heat. The only thing I was missing was the tempura flakes which made the roll a little boring. Either there wasn’t many on here, or they were absent.

Dragon (bottom): Crab salad, avocado, and cucumber topped with eel, avocado and a sweet glaze. One of my favorites. I like how the fresh crunch of the cucumber brightened up the sweet eel. The creamy avocado and crab salad was also a nice addition.

What I liked was that Josh and I could really enjoy an intimate meal without the rest of the place being too loud. We did grab dinner at around 7:30/8 p.m, but most places are packed on a Saturday in Ferndale at that time. If you are looking for a bite and a drink, try Sakana. It has that ritzy lounge feel combined with Asian flare.

Black Pine Tree

Today on the bite tonight: the new Black Pine Tree Sushi Bar, located on Eureka Rd in Southgate. I frequented the previous location, just down the street, and decided to see what the new restaurant was all about. The dining room is very modern and sophisticated , a nice change from the old look. See how they ranked.

I started off with a House Salad with ginger dressing: The purple cabbage adds a nice crunch to a house salad, but the real star of the show is the ginger dressing. Sweet and vinegary with a nice bite that awakens your tastebuds. I could eat it by itself, it’s so good.

Obama (Pictured on left): Crabmeat, cucumber, and avocado covered in a sweet signature sauce, fire toasted and topped with fried potato shavings. This roll was UH-MAZE-ING! Spicy, crunchy, crispy, and sweet all in one bite. The potato shavings were the perfect crispy topping. This was the best roll I’ve ever eaten.

Angry California (Pictured on top right): Crabmeat, cucumber and spicy tempura crumbs. If you like California rolls, try this one. The tempura crumbs were light, yet added a spicy crunch.

Eel, Avacado, Cucumber (Pictured on bottom right): Topped with BBQ eel sauce. Eel has always been a favorite roll of mine. The delicate eel, paired with creamy avocado, and fresh cucumber is delicious. The sweet BBQ eel sauce ties the whole roll together.

The sushi at the new location is better than I remember the old one being. The service, unfortunately was not. Our server started out good, but slacked on drink refills. The other thing I didn’t like was that it was extremely cold in the dining room and Josh and I had to eat with our coats on.  If you haven’t been to the new location, check it out and try the Obama roll.
