Seva

After a trip to the Detroit Science Center this past weekend, Jacki and I grabbed lunch at Seva, a vegan/vegetarian spot in Midtown, Detroit. Seva has been the top vegan restaurant in Ann Arbor, first opening in 1973, but has been a resident of Detroit for about 4 years. Seva showcases typical dishes that would normally include meat, only they put a vegan/vegetarian spin on them (think Reuben or Mushroom French Dip). Located in the back of the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art, Seva has indoor/outdoor seating and a bar area. Check it.

Northville Brewery & Winery Scary Spice Hard Cider: Seasonal cinnamon and nutmeg spiced hard cider. Since I was a huge Spice Girls fan as a girl, I couldn’t pass this up (Don’t judge, you know you were, too)! Crisp, light, sour, with a touch of spice. I was hesitant because I thought the cinnamon would be too much, but it was subtle.

20161015_154738.jpg

Yam Fries: With spicy mayo and BBQ sauce. The fries were slightly sweet, crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. The spicy mayo was my favorite of the two condiments adding just enough bite to the fries.

20161015_154925.jpg

General Tso’s Cauliflower: Light tempura batter, sesame seeds, green onions,  sweet & sour chili sauce. Since General Tso Chicken is a favorite of mine, I had to order this. The cauliflower was so satisfying and I hardly missed the meat. The sauce was delicious, sweet, and the tempura batter was light and didn’t take away from the cauliflower.

The inside dining room consisted of exposed brick (which I love) high, wooden ceilings and delicate string lighting. The bar area was separate from the dining room and had an inviting lightness to it. Seva uses fresh, seasonal ingredients that will make you forget all about the meat. Seva offers Gluten Free items, weekly drink /food specials, and a happy hour menu with half priced appetizers and drinks. Next time, I want to swing by and check out their brunch menu. Mimosa’s, here I come!

Bangkok 96

Today on the Bite Tonight is Bangkok 96. Located on Telegraph Rd. in Dearborn, MI is a Thai restaurant that has been a neighborhood favorite for years. It’s no surprise that these guys were nominated for “Best Thai” in Detroit in 2008. See how they ranked.

Atmosphere: 4 out of 5 bites

Price: 4 out of 5 bites

Quality/Taste: 5 out of 5 bites

Service: 3.5 out of 5 bites

Wow Factor: 4 out of 5 bites (Portion size and taste).

My Pick

Thai Fried Rice: Chicken, peas, carrots, green onion, and egg. This was the best fried rice I have ever tasted and the portion size was huge! Everything was perfect and each piece of rice was fried to perfection. There was  no clumps of white rice at all. I also love the exotic and colorful garnish.

20160618_163108.jpg

Jacki’s Pick

Veggie Pad Thai: Rice noodles with bean sprouts, eggs,  carrots, pea pods, and green onions & topped with peanuts. A classic Thai favorite. I really liked that this sauce was light and not too sweet. Possibly my new favorite!

20160618_163105.jpg The dining room was small, but was beautiful with it’s Thai culture and decor. Service was OK, food was delicious, and the portions were huge for the price. Bangkok 96 offers appetizers, lunch and dinner entrees, desserts, Thai Ice Tea, soup, and vegetarian options. Bangkok 96 even caters. The next time you have an event to plan, but don’t want boring old pizza, think of Bangkok 96.  Jacki, another dinner date is in store very soon!

The Coronado

By far, my favorite spot on my Phoenix, Arizona adventure was the Coronado located in Midtown

20160429_202839

The Coronado is a vegan/vegetarian meets coffee shop/bakery meets craft cocktail fusion that I fell in love with. The menu has a lot of South of the Border influence which was fitting in AZ, only it’s done with such seamless uniqueness that it’s bound to make you forget how you previously enjoyed these classics. They also serve jackfruit which was my first introduction to the fruit coming from the fig and mulberry family. I didn’t order it this trip, but it was exploding all over Phoenix menu’s. It’s texture makes it the perfect meat substitute because it shreds similar to chicken or pork. How cool! See how they ranked.

Lauren was in the mood for a nightcap

Tequila, Cointreau, simple syrup, fresh muddled lime, jalapeno. Spicy! Major points for muddling and mixing up a craft cocktail just like that. Fresh ingredients really make any cocktail taste that much better. The salt/pepper rim added another layer of spice and flavor.

20160429_203152

Star of the show is the…. (drum roll please)

Cauliflower Tacos: 3 masa battered cauliflower tacos w/ guacamole, spinach, pepitas & creamy avocado dressing. These were the best tacos I have ever had! The cauliflower was tender, yet crispy, and so satisfying. I did not miss the meat whatsoever. The creamy avocado dressing was light, the pepitas added crunch and the spinach contributed freshness. These tacos were recommended and now I see why they are the best thing on the menu.

20160429_204150

Fried Guacamole: House made guacamole, breaded & fried, served with fresh made tortilla chips. I didn’t know you could fry guacamole, but you can and it is out of this world delicious. It was crispy , golden, yet still packed with that creamy, fresh guacamole we all love. The corn chips were fresh and still warm. It was topped with a creamy chipotle and avocado sauce which complimented the whole dish. My second favorite dish here!

20160429_203942

Street Corn: Roasted corn on the cob w/ vegan mayo, spices & cotija cheese. Smoky, salty, and sweet. This amped up normal corn on the cob and took it to a whole new level. This is my new way to eat corn.

20160429_203933

Goat Cheese and Jalapeno Marmalade Quesadilla: Sweet, spicy, and creamy. This quesadilla was more sweet than the savory quesadillas I am used to and I liked it. It was different in a good way. The only thing I would improve on was the heavy paprika sprinkled on top. This was a little too much for me, otherwise this was really tasty.

20160429_204142

A lot of the spots in Phoenix are old houses turned restaurants/bars. The Coronado is just like this and has so much character. The restaurant is divided into intimate rooms filled with art and natural wood floors. Now, I am not vegan by any means, but I do like to experience good for you food, and the Coronado is serving up the best. I felt great indulging in the delicious menu items without losing tons of flavor or having to minus off a bunch of toppings.

Shout out to my ladies, Jacki & Lauren for sharing this great experience with me ❤

Maple Leaf Diner

Next Dallas feature is the Maple Leaf Diner. Don’t let this diner, which is located in a strip mall, deceive you. They are what I would describe as a hipster diner and are whipping up some delicious and over the top dishes. Maple Leaf Diner is making their food from scratch and bringing a taste of Canada to the big D. See how they ranked.

Really quirky décor-coffee cups hanging from the ceiling

20160123_130837

Ma and I split the diner omelet (create your own) with spinach, feta, and sausage served with home fries and homemade blueberry preserves. Fresh ingredients and huge portions. The home fries were delicious! The blueberry preserves were some of the best I’ve had and tasted delicious on the thick pillowy toast.

20160123_124055.jpg

Pot Roast Poutine: Fresh cut fries, pot roast, cheese curds  and brown gravy . Pretty decent poutine for a “diner” in Texas (tee hee). An appetizer that eats like a meal. The pot roast was thick and meaty and the cheese curds light and creamy. The whole dish had a nice balance of salty and savory.

20160123_123609

Chicken, Bacon, & Waffles: Fried chicken breast and crispy bacon served on stacked Belgium waffles, topped with fresh strawberries and cream puffs . Talk about over the top! This is the perfect breakfast for your inner child. It’s adult enough to qualify as breakfast, but sweet enough to spoil any appetite for the rest of the day. It’s a delicious tower of yum! The cream puffs were delicious! Ice cream inside a flaky pastry? Whaaat?! The chicken was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The fresh strawberries cut through the salty bacon.

Maple Leaf Diner has the classics, but they take these favorites and give them a makeover. Such as the Magic Mike Burger and the Lox Benedict & Latkes. Be sure to check out their dairy bar and fresh, homemade desserts. The best part is that they serve beer/wine and you can get a “boozy” adult shake while enjoying a solid meal.

La Feria Spanish Tapas

Today on the Bite Tonight: La Feria

20150901_181026

Located on Cass Ave, in Midtown Detroit, La Feria was born in 2012 when three friends decided to bring their joyous experience of the Seville Fair (a week long celebration in Spain) to Detroit. They submitted their idea to the Hatch Detroit contest and won $50,000 to start their business. La Feria Spanish Tapas soon became one of the few restaurants of it’s kind in the area. Popular for serving small plates perfect for sampling and sharing, La Feria, offers authentic dishes. My former co-worker, April and I stopped in for dinner and drinks. See how they ranked.

Our server recommended the Sangria. We didn’t want to be rude, so we tried it.

Sweet, fresh, fruity, with a bold red wine flavor. This Sangria was dangerous because it was so tasty. April and I could’ve easily finished another pitcher. One of the best Sangria’s I have ever had. I really appreciated the fresh fruit.

20150901_170106

Tostada De Almogrote: Cured Goat & Sheep Cheese Spread. Baguette. The baguette was grilled and toasty, but still had a chew. The cheese was creamy and nutty. Perfect starter!

20150901_170755

Patatas Bravas: Fried Potato. Spicy Tomato Salsa. Aioli. One of my favorites! The potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The tomato salsa had the consistency of a marinara sauce and had a nice flavor with a hint of spice. We should’ve ordered two!

20150901_171306

Tocino Relleno De Datil: Bacon Wrapped Dates. Stuffed with Almond. The best! I want to recreate these at my next gathering, but I afraid I won’t do them justice. The bacon was that perfect balance of chewy and crispy and added a nice saltiness to the sweet date. The texture of the almond was delicious. You must try this!

20150901_171721

Chorizo: Grilled Pork-Spanish Paprika-Wine Sausage. The sausage had a good flavor, but was just a little too charred for our taste. When we asked the server about it, she said it was intended to be charred, but it was dry and not appealing. So we asked for something else.

20150901_171309

Our server brought us the Chicken Skewers instead of the sausage. They were grilled with nice grilled marks and still moist. Not spicy, but flavorful.

20150901_174811

Service was good and we really enjoyed the tapas selections. Our server was really knowledgeable and made recommendations based on what our likes were. It was nice sharing and trying different things. Everything we tried was really delicious and fresh (aside from the sausage). You can really taste the passion and love the chef and owners put into every recipe. La Feria offers plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free items so there’s something for everyone. La Feria is really cute inside with exposed brick,  paintings, and vibrant red walls that displays Spain’s culture. I can’t wait to enjoy Sangria and small bites as soon as it’s patio season!

To our next date, April!

Cafe Lentil Burger with onion rings (house speciality) : A patty featuring lentils, walnuts, Parmesan & other fresh ingredients, served on a toasted onion roll with tomato, spinach & a side of garlic aioli. The burger was nicely seasoned and meaty. The garlic aioli was creamy with a nice garlic taste which wasn’t too strong. The onion rings had a nice thick batter and were perfectly cooked.

My friend Nastassia is expecting her second child and we were gathering for the gender reveal. We had a party of nearly 30 and being primarily alone, our server did a decent job. It really was nice to check out the art while we waited for our food and Cass Cafe did a good job at accommodating our large party. I will definitely be back.

It’s a girl! Congrats Nastassia and Josh!
