Detroit: Le Petit Zinc

20161204_114155

Le Petit Zinc (French slang for a local bar) is the kind of place you want to be. French food, Reggae music, quaint with such a unique vibe. They serve delicious coffee and oversized cups of hot chocolate. With a menu bursting with organic and local ingredients, Le Petit Zinc is serving up classic French fare at a friendly price. The croissant sandwiches are amazing and I recommend ordering the daily specials. See how they ranked.

Fromage de Chevre et Epinards: Goat cheese (marinated in olive oil and rosemary), spinach, and pine nuts. The crepe was light and delicate and filled with tons of fresh spinach, goat cheese, and pine nuts. The goat cheese was tangy and the pine nuts added a nice mild crunch. The greens were tossed with a light balsamic dressing which was sweet with a subtle bite.

The food is outstanding and the service is good. The inside dining room has a counter and a total of maybe 6 tables. I think it’s perfect though and creates an incredible buzz. People line up to get a seat and it makes you feel like you are apart of something great. When the weather allows it, the outside patio opens up into a lovely little court yard resembling French country side cafes and offers more seating. Le Petit Zinc is exploding with character with loud colors, paintings, fresh flowers on every table, and one of a kind trinkets sprinkled all throughout the restaurant. Check em out!

The Coronado

By far, my favorite spot on my Phoenix, Arizona adventure was the Coronado located in Midtown

20160429_202839

The Coronado is a vegan/vegetarian meets coffee shop/bakery meets craft cocktail fusion that I fell in love with. The menu has a lot of South of the Border influence which was fitting in AZ, only it’s done with such seamless uniqueness that it’s bound to make you forget how you previously enjoyed these classics. They also serve jackfruit which was my first introduction to the fruit coming from the fig and mulberry family. I didn’t order it this trip, but it was exploding all over Phoenix menu’s. It’s texture makes it the perfect meat substitute because it shreds similar to chicken or pork. How cool! See how they ranked.

Lauren was in the mood for a nightcap

Tequila, Cointreau, simple syrup, fresh muddled lime, jalapeno. Spicy! Major points for muddling and mixing up a craft cocktail just like that. Fresh ingredients really make any cocktail taste that much better. The salt/pepper rim added another layer of spice and flavor.

Star of the show is the…. (drum roll please)

Cauliflower Tacos: 3 masa battered cauliflower tacos w/ guacamole, spinach, pepitas & creamy avocado dressing. These were the best tacos I have ever had! The cauliflower was tender, yet crispy, and so satisfying. I did not miss the meat whatsoever. The creamy avocado dressing was light, the pepitas added crunch and the spinach contributed freshness. These tacos were recommended and now I see why they are the best thing on the menu.

Fried Guacamole: House made guacamole, breaded & fried, served with fresh made tortilla chips. I didn’t know you could fry guacamole, but you can and it is out of this world delicious. It was crispy , golden, yet still packed with that creamy, fresh guacamole we all love. The corn chips were fresh and still warm. It was topped with a creamy chipotle and avocado sauce which complimented the whole dish. My second favorite dish here!

20160429_203942

Street Corn: Roasted corn on the cob w/ vegan mayo, spices & cotija cheese. Smoky, salty, and sweet. This amped up normal corn on the cob and took it to a whole new level. This is my new way to eat corn.

20160429_203933

Goat Cheese and Jalapeno Marmalade Quesadilla: Sweet, spicy, and creamy. This quesadilla was more sweet than the savory quesadillas I am used to and I liked it. It was different in a good way. The only thing I would improve on was the heavy paprika sprinkled on top. This was a little too much for me, otherwise this was really tasty.

A lot of the spots in Phoenix are old houses turned restaurants/bars. The Coronado is just like this and has so much character. The restaurant is divided into intimate rooms filled with art and natural wood floors. Now, I am not vegan by any means, but I do like to experience good for you food, and the Coronado is serving up the best. I felt great indulging in the delicious menu items without losing tons of flavor or having to minus off a bunch of toppings.

Shout out to my ladies, Jacki & Lauren for sharing this great experience with me ❤

Iheart Kolache

Today on the Bite Tonight: Iheart Kolache Coffee-Bakery

Last week, my mom and I traveled to Texas to visit Jay. One of our first stops on my culinary journey was to experience a kolache. Kolaches first originated in the 1700’s in Czechoslovakia and were brought to Texas by immigrants who settled there. These delicious little pastries come in savory choices such as Philly Cheese steak or BBQ Beef, but also can be enjoyed with fruit fillings including blueberry, cheery, and apricot. Kolaches are also popular in Oklahoma and Montgomery, Minnesota, where they are rumored to be the kolache capital of the world. See how they ranked.

Kolache assortment (6 for around $12): Chicken enchilada, Ranchero, Sausage, Sausage croissant, sausage, egg, and cheese, (breakfast), and Bacon, egg, and cheese.

kolache assortment

Chicken Enchilada: Chicken breast, tomato sauce, cheese, and sour cream. I’ll start with the best part, the pastry! Warm, soft, with a slight chew and sweetness. The perfect dough to hug the delicious filling. Not to spicy, with tender chicken, and a perfect balance of cheese and tomato sauce.

Sausage, egg, and cheese: Move over mcmuffin! All I can say is that this is perfect for breakfast on the go. All the great breakfast ingredients you want baked into a soft roll.

The service was good in the nice, clean bakery. I love that you can get different types of kolaches. You can get a meal in one or simply a croissant wrapped around a European sausage (even better than the breakfast). The combination of the soft, warm, buttery roll and the filling is out of this world. If you get the chance to try one, do it and then order more to go!

There’s something about a chalkboard menu that brings me back to my childhood.

Miravalle, Guatemala: Blueberry, plum. Bold, solid, rich. I could not taste fruit at all, but the coffee was still delicious.

Chocolate, hazelnut cookie: Slightly sweet, fresh baked, and soft. The hint of sea salt was amazing and took this cookie over the top.

Mocha: Rich blend of coffee and chocolate. Nice presentation!

I like Astro because it has a welcoming, kind atmosphere. The baristas were more than willing to assist with clueless patrons like Tiffany and I. We received helpful recommendations based on our tastes. With a comfortable, yet trendy community, Astro is brewing good ass coffee while using local ingredients. It was good catching up with a dear friend and the employees didn’t even kick us out when we stayed past closing.  Good luck, Tiffany! I wish you nothing, but the very best. ❤

Caramel Crunch Mocha Latte

My significant other got me hooked on Tim Horton’s coffee. When I found out about the new Caramel Crunch Mocha Latte I couldn’t wait to try it.

Sweet, chocolatey, and delicious! The hot coffee melts the caramel crunch, adding a subtle sweetness that pairs well with the mocha.
